Lose Weight with Healthy Snacks On the Go

A recent survey found that 90% of women admitted to snacking at work, but 80% of them were unhappy with their snack choices and almost never chose healthy snacks. The fact is most people are snacking because they are hungry (and sometimes bored), but their options on hand are often limited or just plain unhealthy.  Surrounded by candy bars and vending machines, consumers will either forgo the snack or cave in to calorie-laden, nutritionally void temptations.

The key is to always bring your own stash, which you can keep in your purse, your car, your desk, or in the office refrigerator. Eating a light, healthy snack between meals can actually help you lose weight by managing your cravings and hunger.  This, in turn, will help prevent you from eating too much and too fast at your next meal. Here are a few great portable and nutritious snacks that can keep up with your busy life.

Fruit and Nuts – 1 cup fruit + (8-10 nuts or 1 tablespoon nut butter)

This is a great combination as it provides protein, carbs, fiber, healthy fats, vitamins and minerals.  It also provides different textures and tastes to please your palette: crunchy, creamy, sweet and salty providing the balance both your mind and body crave.  With so many options and possible combinations you can have a new snack of this type every day. Try a spread of almond butter atop a small ripe banana or apple. Delicious, nutritious and filling!

Fruit & Nut Bar

The key to a good fruit and nut bar, if you aren’t making this healthy snack yourself, is first to be able to recognize all of the ingredients.  Less is more.  Look for all natural, whole food ingredients.  Stay within the low single digits for sugar grams, at least 4 grams of protein and at minimum 3 grams of fiber to keep you satisfied longer.  Two great choices are Lara Bars and KIND bars.

Again, protein, carbs, fiber, crunchy, creamy and sweet = Balance and Satiety

Plain Greek Yogurt with Nuts and Berries

The extra protein and creamy texture in this healthy snack is great for satisfying your hunger in between meals. To lose weight, choose one that doesn’t have any flavoring or additives so you can add your own for a good dose of flavor, vitamins, healthy fats and fiber.  Don’t feel guilty if you drizzle some honey on it too!
